Who let the nuts out? -Arkham- by xanykaos Who let the nuts out? -Arkham- by xanykaos
Just in time for Halloween! Well, not quite. But this is what I spent most of Halloween Night doing.

Assignment for Drawing for Sequential Art--draw an interior enviroment, with at least four figures. The class decided on a mental institute. I was sure it was going to be kinda boring, and then I suddenly went on a Batman kick (I blame the Riddler--why are you in my brain?!?!). Sor it's Arkham Asylum. Good old Arkham.

I'm...reasonably pleased with this. Not ridiculously so, but it's got its high points. It has it's low-points too, like not being about to tell the girl doing the high-kick is Harley, not being about to tell the shadow in the doorway is Two-Face, and not being able to tell the things coming out of the doorway are vines. But then again, considering all the detail work as a 4AM job... eh.

Oh, and that's the Riddler on the side. He's writing a riddle, of course. In blood. It's so hard to make him distinctive without the bowler aht/spandex. Y'know, something I find odd is that, in the only comic I've got where he's got a cameo, they let him wear his mask while in the asylum. Wonder why? Maybe cuz it just looks cool.

I love the gassed police man, though. Easily my favorite part to do, and the only one that came out exactly how I wanted.

If I ink this when I get it back (which I think I might do--for practice), then I guess I'll move this into scraps.

(Takes a deep breath) Ah, nothing puts a smile on my face quite like an Arkham Riot.

"So, let's think to ourselves, kiddies. We've managed to, uh, oust the opposition and take all the doctors hostage. (Well, all the living doctors.) The nurses are tied up in Pea Brain's cell, the orderlies are either playing "magic coin toss" with my good buddy Harvey, having a screaming contest with Johnny boy, or laughing their brains out at Harley-pie's jokes. Dummy & Dumber are duking it out with Zsasz in the halls, along with all the other lesser loons, and we basically have the makings of a real FUNhouse on our hands."

One of my favorite fanfictions....And now I will never look at a riot the same again. This picture just reminds me of it so.

Awww, MAN!!
No Scarecrow... TT_TT

LOL!! That's alright the awesomeness of the other character made up for that. And don't worry about us not being able to tell.

I was able to figure out who everyone was in the picture pretty easily. Except Two-Face. I couldn't figure out the sillouette.

Lun-Sei Featured By Owner Aug 22, 2009
Beautiful! And the Riddler looks very creepy here. Funny that four years later they would actually make a videogame in which the Riddler does write a riddle in blood, inside Arkham's walls...

this is sick...i love it!

This is veeery nicely done. And I realized who they were. You can tell from the flipping coin about Harvey, so I guess it's just if you notice that detail. Anyway I like it =]

Random Police Officer: "Comissioner! Comissioner! Something terrible has happened: All of the criminals in Arkham have broken out!"
Comissioner: "Gasp! Could it be that putting every single super-villain in Gotham in a small, poorly-guarded, concentrated area was possibly a bad idea?! Double-gasp!!

i like this pic. *thumbs up*

That is amazing! I love the perspective and backgrounds here (and the gassed policeman's expression).

Wonderful work on this. :D
LadyVincira Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2006 the detail on this one. <3 For some reason, the roof is just wowing me.

And YAY RIDDLER. I happen to like him. XD Not as much as the Scarecrow, but still a great deal.

they let him wear his mask while in the asylum. Wonder why?

I think it's because he'd probably flip without it- like the Mad Hatter and his hats. The best way to avoid a hissyfit episode is just to let them have their un-threatening toys.

This is really hot. I love the angle. And, mm, rad interior-ness. I LOVE.
Thanatophobia Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2006
OR, when they tried to take it from him, he kept asked "Whyy?", until they gave up. :D

I love the little vandal-nut there. :D
And the DETAIL... :o
great job. :)

Incredible perspective, angle, and detail. You caught it all very well, which is a difficult thing to do when drawing at an angle such as this. :+fav:
CaptainQuirk Featured By Owner Nov 3, 2005
Great perspective angles, esp turning the whole thing slanted. It adds to the feeling of crazyness.

Awesome. I especially love the angle on this.
The scan seems to be a bit blown out, though. :(

Oh, and Harley Quinn is my favourite batman character ever. ^_^
ChickenfoxStudios Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005  Hobbyist General Artist
I'm going to print this up and show it to my physics teacher, if that's okay with you. He'll give us extra credit for finding modern artists who use perspective and here you are... helping me out. So... may I?
xanykaos Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
Sure. Dunno if it'll work--my perspective's a bit skewed because I put the left vanishing point a little close. It works for drama, but it does make the perspective a bit off. But hey, go for it!
ChickenfoxStudios Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005  Hobbyist General Artist
He's not an artist, so he won't notice ^_^ But you USED it, so that's what counts.

Very very nice. The only thing I would say is that for the point of view, the doorways either look too short, or too wide, unless they're double doors of course. Still, that's just a minor quibble. I like the pipes in the ceiling...I'd probably be too lazy to even attempt something that daunting. The angle's brilliant as well...really makes you think it's an insane asylum. :D

By the way, with registration tonight and whatnot, what classes are you taking for winter quarter? I have Drawing & Design for Illustrators, Survey of Illustration, and Life Drawing II.
xanykaos Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
Thanks. I could claim that insane asylum doors are big and thick. That's what I love about my major--it pays to get things right, but you can fudge a few things and claim that they're intentional. You're right though, and thanks for bringing it to my attention--I'll make sure to pay attention to the door proportions next time.

I'm taking Materials&Techniques, Survey of 20th Century Art, and 3D Design.

I really dig the ceiling. Hard to do that sort of stuff, I know. :)
randomartist Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
I do like Harlequinn hi-kicking the guy off in the background.
Sheana Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
Ahhh, Arkham Asylum's inmates. Possibly my favoritest Rogues Gallery ever.

Nice! I like the angle of the shot, and the pipe ceiling. :)

Riddler tends to be boring most of the time, but like most Bat-villains that are lesser-known/less interesting than The Joker and Two-Face and such, he kicked quite a bit of ass in the old 'Batman: The Animated Series'.
xanykaos Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
Boring? Really? Crying shame that. He does seem rather more lucid than most Batman villians. I need to read more Batman comics--I hadn't read any until this summer when I picked up Arkham Asylum: Living Hell. Most of my Batlore comes from TAS, but it was sooooo good. "Police Headquarters room 206"<--priceless!

And is it sad that I read your comment as "he kicked quite a bit of teddy"? Curse you, Hive!
Sheana Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
Hee hee. Teddy.

Well, I dunno if I really do mean boring. I guess Adam West and Joel Schumacher ruined a lot of Bat-things for me... :P
Souji-Murakumo Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005  Hobbyist Digital Artist
And I thought of HPL just a bit before I thought of Batman. Oddly, this practically works either way. And I'm not sure if there's an actual insane asylum in Arkham.

Things look nice, and that's far more detail than I'm usually likely to put into a background.

Uh, because I only had the candy corn last night, looks like you're spared my own near-insane raving.
xanykaos Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005
Arkham is an insane asylum. While it works as a prison, what it is is a high-security asylum for the criminally insane--for people too dangerous to put with generic street thugs, or "special needs" criminals (like Mr. Freeze).
What's HPL?
Mmm...candy corn. I need to go see if there's any discout bags of wee little pumkins left. I love those things.

I'm usually not one for detailed backgrounds, but I've been doing them a lot more for my assignments and all. I noticed on my first one that throwing in a good background brings a panel together, and so now I'm forcing myself to do practices. Besides, the point of the assignment was sorta to prove we did our research, but didn't just copy from photos, so...The pipes were actually kinda fun at 4 AM.
Souji-Murakumo Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2005  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Oh, I know Batman's Arkham is an insane asylum. But the Arkham in H.P. Lovecraft's fiction is a town in Massachuestts located on the Miskatonic river. No clue if it has an asylum. Does have a lovely university.

And the background detail (pipes included) is indeed very nice. I'll probably be experimenting with similar stuff in my own comic, assuming it gets off the ground.

And because I only thought of it after the earlier comment, I must mess with the title. "Who, who who, who who?" Although my answer is they did it themselves.
